Practice Question - How does The Lego Movie use intertextuality to represent different people in the target audience?

The Lego Movie uses intertextuality to represent different members of the target audience. Overall the film has 3 with the main audience, the primary audience, being young children as the age rating is a U. The target audience varies based of what the different ages watch the film for. As the secondary age is teenagers, parents and grandparents they are most likely not going to watch the film for their own enjoyment therefore the primary audience would be younger children.

As the film is rated U the obvious primary audience would be the ages of 5 and 12. The main reason is of course the film has Lego in which is a toy children love to play with and would want to watch. As well as this there are plenty of Lego intertextuality for character like Harry Potter, Robin Hood, Milhouse, Star Wars, Superman, Wonder Women, Barbie and lots more so with this intertextuality children would appreciate seeing their favourite characters in a Lego film as Lego. Therefore overall this is very clever idea having a whole film made out of Lego to appeal to lots of young children as they play with Lego more than adults.

The next secondary target audience would be teenagers as some may still enjoy Lego not only as a film but still possibly as a toy. But with this the characters presented in the film would also appeal to teenagers as it can be seen as a reflection of their world in LTego an example of this is shown with Starbucks in the very beginning of the film shown as a popular coffee place the same way it is shown in real life especially with teenagers it is more popular than with adults and children. With this the film has a lot of references to their younger life but is as well a light hearted film and may make them laugh when they see characters like Wonder Women as a lego character it can come across as funny to teens. Teens would also watch The Lego Movie for their education to learn about all the intertextuality in the film with enjoying the references to well known characters.

The other secondary targeted audience would be adults more specifically parents and grandparents as it still may reflect on their younger life like teenagers with popular characters like Shakespeare, The Stature of Liberty, The Matrix and Star Wars may also bring a smile to their face as lego. However the main reason adults would see this film is for their child's or grandchild enjoyment not by choice. Adults can still find this film enjoying as it has a bit of humour in when it is not shown by the film and more by the characters. Overall adults would never choose to watch this film they would watch this for the pleasure of their children but will also understand references for films and characters that they have watched and everyone knows.

This film has been a successful film mainly because of the amount of intertextuality it uses. It has many popular characters that are well known but the fact that a lot of companies who originate these famous characters allowed Lego to put them in a film of their own and uses there original ideas for their own success. However on the other hand the most likely reason production companies allowed there character to be used in this movie is that it is an excellent opportunity for marketing their product and has shown to be a success especially for Batman. Batman plays one of the main characters for this film and not a surprise a few years later a Lego Batman Film came out.
