The Lego Movie: Poster Campaign

Connotation - Describing for example whats can be related to the colour e.g. red = fire, blood, love etc. An idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
Denotation - Is describing whats actually there for example the red locker. The literal or primary meaning of a word in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests.

Denotations of the game cover:

  • Bright colours.
  • Big guy towering over the people with dark background to show he is evil.


Connotations of the game cover:

  • The poster is 3D implying the lego brick which is 3D popping out at you.
  • Blue, red and green colours which is sci-fi colours.
  • Emmet in the front implies he is the main character.
  • Big guy in the back is angry and has a red lightening which shows he is the bad guy as red is the colour of blood, evil and fire.
  • Main characters are in the front.
  • Red and grey in background is action. Blue, white and green in the front is sci-fi. The dark blue, yellow aabd grey is thriller or crime. To the left there is brown colours for the western genre. All the different colours show this game has all the different genres.
Colour pallet:

  • Dark contrasts the evil
  • Lights contrasts the good
  • Sci-fi colours in the bottom right
  • Action in the top left
  • Thriller in top right
  • Multiple genres in the film e.g. action, western, sci-fi
Film posers are released at different times and contain different information - just like the trailers.
Teaser posters are more vague they have not a lot of information maybe just the year it is coming out.



  • Basic simple so makes people desperate to find out.
  • Colours describe the film (purple, grey, black, green)
  • Says when it is coming out and the title.
  • Basic but very effective with it falling breaking away into the dust.
  • Striking image.
  • Colour pallet represents type of film.
  • No tag line.



  • Has all the main character fitted in.
  • As well as having the actors names at the top.
  • Same colours of purple, black and blue.
  • Image has layers of the different characters.
  • The bigger the character has been made the more main it is.
  • Striking image.
  • Colour pallets represents the genre of film.
  • A lot more things conformed.
  • No tag line.
