Mojo Exam Case Study

Mojo magazine was first published 25 years ago and since then has featured a wide range of artists mostly around the genre of rock. The primary target audience of Mojo is 35 years plus, predominantly males who have a serious interest in music. Mojo magazine is said to be 'The Music Expert'.

Mojo magazine has featured a range of musicians over the years. This particular cover will appeal to this target audience as it features a throwback theme through using a low angle medium closeup of the iconic band Fleetwood Mac. The main image is a recent shot of the band members in a very formal basic way with all members looking straight forward, the angle connotes them as God like. The black and white theme would appeal to the primary target audience with the serious choice of colours and the nostalgic as the target audience would remember when older magazines would be in all black and white. The bottom of the main image is almost a mirror image of the top but it was taken of the band 30 years ago. This a very good idea to use for the target audience, 35 plus, as some of the older readers will remember Fleetwood from the almost flashback photo. As well the reflected photo isn't as clear as the main image it is more ghost-like showing readers it was in their past and maybe haunting them, this again is an example of nostalgia being used to attract the target audience.

There is also a free CD with the magazine is the golden square in the bottom left.  This bright image would catch most peoples eye. But when it comes to the golden colour it has a higher class colour choice suggesting that the audience for this magazine is part of a higher class as these kinds of colours would attract them.

The colour pallet for this Mojo magazine cover has a very mature colour scheme of mainly black and white with hints of red. This use of colour connotes a serious tone to the content of the magazine and is appropriate for the rock genre of the magazine. The splashes of red connote well with the black and white background to make certain things stand out. The colours scheme helps with attracting the primary target audience of of 35 plus. the colour choices also make everything clear you where you can still see the background with the writing over the top. With the black and white background you can still read the black and grey writing over the top with the main image still clear to recognise.

The Mojo masthead in the background meaning a magic charm, talisman or spell or influence, especially magic power. This can suggest the magazine has a magic charm and a influence on readers. However the colour of the masthead Mojo in white slightly blends with the background which is also white. This shows this isn't the most important part that you are meant to see and is not as much or as important as everything else. Mojo wants readers to focus on the more important parts and less on their own logo. However the target audience will be attracted to the basic white colour of the word 'Mojo' and that it is settling and not right up and bright in their faces. The audience will like that its is not bright but still readable and recognisable. So that the full focus is on the only thing in black and white the band Fleetwood Mac.

The minor images which are in the very top that are pictures of Motown and Joy Division. These images are put in as something else included in a magazine but still isn't the main focus. It is small and in the very top this shows its less importance and that it isn't and shouldn't be the main focus. The minor images also tell you what also features in the magazine. In this case the minor images chosen at the top most likely are the same genre as the magazine (rock). The audience will like this as they may find something new or recover something old. None of the minor images are bright they both have calm colours that don't make them stand out. Simple colour that would attract the certain age.

There is also a free CD included which is Motor City Soul that has 15 songs 'that made Detroit move' from various different artists. Based on the genre of the band the CD is most likely rock to make sense that it is with this magazine. It is also the colour gold which would attract the higher class of the primary target audience.

On this magazine the lexis is very simple using quotes from the band saying "It's a miracle we survived" which includes a bit of humour as well as the truth about their past. However it is not fully formal it uses abbreviations for example "status quo" so this may suggest something about the age that it can sometimes be slightly younger than the 35 plus suggested age.

The typography is a normal its the basic font that is clear and is in a black and grey colour scheme. The black colour stands out on the bright white background to attract the audience for it to stand out. the audience will like this as they are around 35 plus to it is simple for them to enjoy and want.

The cover uses teasers of what that will be included inside. For example "The Mac Now" short and snappy to tell you what to aspect and to make you read on. Also they have "British Jazz Blows Up!" which makes people question and want to know how. As well they put a big 'Plus' and 'And' in red which stands out on the white to make it catch peoples eye. This makes sure people see it and read on about it which is good market selling ideas which most magazine companies use to sell their product.

The layout of the magazine is very simple and easily readable. Every piece of writing is clear and nothing is overlapped and covered to make it unreadable.
