Exam Style Music Video Question

Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. Refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studied to support your answer.

Music videos use media language such as the use of colour, camera angles, shot types, mise en scene and characters to create different effects to fit the meaning of the song and the musicians image that would relate to a targeted audience. Sk8er Boi and Teenage Dirtbag have both similarities and differences in their  music videos.

Teenage Dirtbag is very stereotypical when using the average American love story that would relate to the audience well by using bright colours making it more main stream. Where as Sk8er Boi has more of a rebellious theme using darker colours that would relate to a different target audience. Teenage Dirtbag uses the main character from American Pie in their video attracting the target audience because it is drawing on the success of the movie American Pie with a main stream audience. Where as in the music video Sk8er Boi the singer is seen as well as a group of rebellious teenagers which a specific audience will relate to as it would be what they do in their lives. Each video uses mise en scene in their videos to create a specific theme that target audiences will look for. Sk8er Boi has been de-saturated in he editing process to create a monochrome effect. This effect helps reinforce the rock genre. Where as Teenage Dirtbag has a highly saturated look, where colours have been emphasised in post-production, to create more of a vibrant look that fits with this more up-beat, fun song in comparison to Sk8er Boi. In Sk8er Boi the creators have decided to use shakey camera work to show the rebellious messy side of the music video the creator are trying to show. Where as in Teenage Dirtbag it is shown that the bullied teenager is in a high angle shot which shows his weakness making it seem that he is the weaker compared to the bully who is put in a low angle shot making it look like he is higher up showing his power of the person he bullies. On the other hand in Sk8er Boi we also see a lot of low angle shots of skate boarding and bmx this will relate to the audience by also using dark themes this will attract the rebellious audience.

Music videos use media language such as the use of colour to create different effects to fit the meaning of the song and the musicians' image. Uptown Funk and If I Were a Boy use very different post-production techniques. If i Were a Boy has ben de-natured in the editing process to create a monochrome effect. This effect helps to reinforce serious narrative that is being explored. In contrast, Uptown Funk has a highly saturated look, where colours have emphasised in post production, to create a more vibrant look that fits wit the up-beat, fun song.
