- to explore the disaster movie genre

Disaster Movies

Disaster movies are a popular sub-genre of action adventure films. Examples include: Independence Day, 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Armageddon, 28 Days Later, I am Legend, The Book of Eli and War of the Worlds.

I've seen 2 of the top 15 disaster movies. My favourite was The Impossible because of how the family find their way back to each other after a terrible tragedy.  

Disaster Movie Genre Conventions

Movie: The Impossible, The Titanic and World War Z
  1. Both in these movies.
  2. The Impossible and World War Z
  3. The Impossible - natural, The Titanic - natural?, World War Z - zombies
  4. World War Z and The Impossible
  5. The Impossible (travel then the disaster happens). Titanic (travel onto the disaster)
  6. In all films many people die and all have to travel, they all overcome the problem but not fully.

Genre Conventions 

Independence Day:
  • not characters seen
  • city on fire with possible alien ship over it
  • city is on fire
  • none
  • the bright blue ship will light up the city as attract attention as it is different and stands out.
  • clear something major to do with aliens a attack on a city.
  • small title shows it is not as important as the main image
  • action
Godzilla:
  • just monsters?
  • destroyed place on fire
  • monsters fighting?
  • none
  • blue of the monsters can easily be seen on the fire floor
  • a massive attack of monsters
  • Godzilla in the same blue to stand out on the black ground
  • action
Contagion:
  • a main six
  • in action pictures
  • fear on the phone

  • yellow like the yellow danger sign
  • something serious happens based on character faces
  • basic text black stands out
